Officials from Laos recently released an update about a circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 outbreak in the region that includes one new case, an 8-year-old boy who was paralyzed on Sept. 7.

There are 13 wild poliovirus type 1 cases, the latest case of which was confirmed in the Batikot district in Nangarhar. This patient’s paralysis began on Sept. 4.

Health professionals believe that these outbreaks can begin in regions that have low population immunity. They have used this opportunity to remind the public that it is wise to have strong vaccination coverage.

Approximately 35 million children received polio vaccines in Pakistan as part of campaigns that took place in September, and approximately 3 million children were able to catch up with their missed vaccinations during the campaign.

The campaign included community-based vaccinators who implemented various immunization activities on a regular basis. There were also health camps to locate and vaccinate children in regions that are difficult to access.

The Independent Monitoring Board in London held a meeting to determine the progress that has been made in eliminating polio from the world health scene. The board will release its recommendations during the next few months and weeks.
