UNICEF teamed with Uganda’s Department of Disaster Preparedness, Management of the Office of the Prime Minister, and the National Meteorological Authority to recently release an assessment report about El Niño, cholera and malaria in Uganda.
The multi-sectoral rapid assessment included 25 high-risk districts. The goal was to determine the number of people who are most at risk for illnesses and evaluate the immediate capacities and needs of these people. This will help health care workers as they plan response efforts.
The project will give supplies to children living in more than 5,000 impacted households. This is just one part of the response to the cholera outbreak.
Ten districts with malaria outbreaks have received support from five public health specialists. This response work began in December, as the workers monitored and supervised patients, delivered supplies, and conducted reports.
In addition, El
Niño
has caused heavy rainfall through November. There are 33 districts that have high risks for negative effects, like flooding and mud slides, from the weather activity.
To protect people, health care workers and government agencies have made text messaging through the National Emergency Coordination and Operate Center Disaster Risk Management System that people can use to send updates and information.
