Scientists from the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases recently conducted a study demonstrating that ongoing HIV replication continues even during antiretroviral therapy (ART) treatments.
There are countless people around the world who suffer from HIV infections. Even though many of them receive ART treatments, there is still no effective prevention or cure for the disease, which can eventually progress into AIDS.
The study, published in Nature journal, outlines how the viral replication sustains the reservoirs of HIV. Understanding this could enable researchers to help people around the world. People who have HIV infections and also receive ART show undetectable HIV levels in their blood samples. Despite this, the HIV reservoirs continue to sustain themselves throughout the treatments.
Using this new research, scientists may be able to develop new strategies for fighting HIV infections. This could potentially lead to methods that could eliminate the reservoirs of HIV and cure the infection for long-term results.
