Scientists from the New York Blood Center (NYBC) have received patents for several projects that are designed to safeguard the U.S. blood supply and advance vaccine therapies.
NYBC has a unique job as a community-based, independent blood center because it also runs a successful research institute for creating products to help patients around the world.
“Research has been central to the mission of New York Blood Center since its founding more than 50 years ago,” NYBC President and CEO Christopher Hillyer said. “These new patents provide solid evidence of our continuing leadership in transfusion medicine and cellular therapies.”
One of the patents has received significant attention because it will help HIV patients. The new technology is for a detergent/solvent inactivation of viruses located inside plasma. The drug will be a fusion inhibitor to help HIV patients.
Two teams earned patents for their work in HIV. They include Asim Debnath, Shibo Jiang, Hongtao Zhang, Francesca Curelli, Q. Zhao, Chungen Pan, Yusen Zhou, Lanying Du, Lu Lu, Zhi Qi, and Guangyu Zhao.
