Professionals from the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) recently stated that they have finished their active Ebola monitoring, which observed people traveling from West Africa to New Mexico for signs of the potentially deadly virus.
Ebola, a rare hemorrhagic disease, was found in 1976 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, close to the Ebola River. In the 1970s, the disease spread through several countries; the largest outbreak started in March 2014 in West Africa.
The outbreak most significantly impacted Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. Other nations that reported or developed Ebola cases included
Italy, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S. This is why the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC)
created active Ebola monitoring guidelines to better protect people around the world from developing Ebola infections.
The staff at the NMDOH used the guidelines from the CDC to observe travelers from Guinea, Liberia, Mali and Sierra Leone. The monitoring started in October 2014 and officially ended in December 2015.
According to the CDC, Ebola is no longer transmitting throughout West Africa. This means there is no longer a need for active Ebola monitoring.
