The National IHR Focal Point of Jordan recently informed the World Health Organization (WHO) of an additional Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) case in Jordan.
The patient is a man who is 53 years old. He lives in Amman city and first developed MERS-CoV symptoms on Sept. 26. He went to a hospital for healthcare, and after the doctors treated him symptomatically, they sent him home. The man returned to the hospital on Sept. 29 with worsened symptoms. The doctors admitted him into an isolated room before discharging him on Oct. 1.
When the man left the hospital on Oct. 1, his conditions had not shown any improvement. He went to a second healthcare facility where he was once again treated symptomatically and went home.
His condition worsened until he found medical care at a third healthcare facility on Oct. 3. After running tests, the healthcare workers found that he tested positively for MERS-CoV on Oct. 6.
As of today, the patient is now in ICU in stable condition. He is a smoker but doesn’t show any comorbid conditions. He is one of the contacts of another MERS-CoV case that was sent to the WHO on Sept. 21 after receiving laboratory confirmation.
