A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the University of Georgia shows that 75 percent of first-time mothers plan to accept the recommended vaccine schedule.
The survey of 200 first-time expectant mothers showed 10.5 percent of the women intended to spread out the vaccines while 4 percent intended to receive some but not all
vaccines on behalf of their children. Another 10.5 percent said that they had not yet decided whether to follow the vaccine schedule. The final statistics did not show how many first-time mothers refused the vaccines.
Ways that first-time mothers differ could impact whether they accept or refuse the vaccine schedule. Mothers who turn down the vaccines mostly used their family, friends and Internet resources to determine whether they would follow the schedule.
“Most of the moms-to-be indicated they were interested in information on childhood vaccines, but many were not actively looking for such information, and very few had received any from a health care provider,” Glen Nowak, director of the Center for Health and Risk Communication at the University of Georgia, said.
Health professionals intend to make information from family physicians and pediatricians more readily accessible to mothers.
