An immunization campaign in Timor-Leste targets children living in remote areas who have not received their vaccinations by increasing the coverage rate and the capacity of various national health institutions.
The leader of the campaign, Luis Manuel Albino, the chief of Liquica Community Health Center (CHD), has a two-member vaccination team based in Suco Fatukesi, a village in the Liquica municipality of Timor-Leste. His job is to travel from door to door to meet many parents and guarantee that all children between the ages of zero and 15 years old have received their vaccinations.
“This morning, I made an announcement by megaphone to make parents aware of the vaccination campaign,” Albino said. “We are visiting communities, especially who are living in remote areas, to make sure that all children are vaccinated.”
The community has been largely receptive of the campaign.
“I want my child to be healthy,” Anna Paula, 24, mother of an 11-month-old child, said. “I know immunization will protect my children from various diseases. Initially, I was reluctant to take my children to the health post, as it takes around two hours’ walk to reach. Today, when I heard that the health team will come to our neighborhood, I took this opportunity.”
