The Hong Kong Department of Health and Center for Health Protection released updated information on cases of dengue fever on Friday.

Through Nov. 12, the number of reported cases has been 100 with two cases reported between Nov. 4 and 12. The CHP also reports that the number of dengue cases reported in the southern region of Taiwan has reached 33,011 cases with 150 deaths.

Residents are encouraged to take anti-mosquito measures and to maintain personal protective measures to avoid the disease.

“Dengue viruses encompass four different serotypes,” a CHP spokesperson said. “The symptoms of first infection with one serotype are usually mild, but subsequent infections with other serotypes even years afterward are more likely to result in severe dengue, also known as dengue haemorrhagic fever. Severe dengue is serious and potentially fatal. Without proper treatment, the case fatality rate of severe dengue can exceed 20 percent.”

Currently there is no vaccine for any dengue serotype.

The CHP recommends travelers to areas affected by the fever wear clothing that is loose and lightly colored , treat exposed skin with DEET-repellent, carry a portable bed net and take precautions against mosquitoes should be taken prior to arrival.

Residents are asked to remove standing and stagnant water.
