Countries undergoing humanitarian crises in North Africa and the Middle East have also been found to be facing significant challenges in maintaining sustainable HIV responses needed to respond to the AIDS epidemic.
Recurring interruptions in HIV services, limited capacity within national programs and limited prioritization of humanitarian responses for HIV are just a few of the obstacles facing these countries during the AIDS epidemic.
UNAIDS recently collaborated with the General Secretariat of the League of Arabe States and the Regional/Arab Network against AIDS (RANAA) to organize a consultation to find solutions for this problem. The goal is to strengthen the national capacities to sustain a strong HIV response.
“The notion of working for the most excluded is a fundamental reality for all partners and not an option if we want to see the end of the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat,” Luis Loures, UNAIDS Deputy Executive Director, said.
The solutions found during this meeting could change HIV solutions around the world.
“I am looking forward to building an important partnership with UNAIDS and for the ministry to play a more active role in the future following global endorsement of the Sustainable Development Goals, especially on gender issues,” the Minister of International Cooperation said.
