AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses, a peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert Inc., recently featured articles about the use of emerging biomedical pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infections.
The new prevention method targets populations at the highest risk for contracting HIV. These methods are designed to give people the most efficient, near-term strategy to decrease
HIV
transmission rates.
The research ranges from preventing HIV infections by stopping HIV transmission with CD4+ T lymphocytes to creating a co-culture system that would display kinds of conditions and cells within genital mucosal tissues.
“Efforts to decrease the spread of HIV worldwide continue at a rapid pace,” the authors of “A Shot in the Arm for HIV Prevention? Recent Successes & Critical Threshold,” said. “With the development of new biomedical interventions and findings from pivotal clinical trials, a new framework for short and long-term prevention strategies is emerging.”
The latest clinical trials results, research and progress for developing HIV vaccines are included in the journal. These titles include “Exploring Antibody Potential as Prophylactic/Therapeutic Strategies for Prevention of Early Mucosal HIV-1 Infection,” and “Innate Antibacterial Activity in Female Genital Tract Secretions is Associated with Increased Risk of HIV Acquisition.”
